On March 3, 2026, MassHire Greater Brockton Workforce Board hosted a celebration event recognizing participants of the Diesel Technology & Alternative Fuels & Emissions training program. The event brought together program participants and program staff to reflect on the accomplishments of the cohorts and the impact of the program.
This project was funded by the Senator Kenneth J. Donnelly Workforce Success Grant (Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund FY’21 Appropriation) and funds appropriated through the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021. This grant initiative is administered by Commonwealth Corporation on behalf of the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development and the Workforce Skills Cabinet.
Over the two-year grant period, 14 participants remained committed to the Diesel Technology & Alternative Fuels & Emissions program. To date, 11 participants have successfully completed the full training program, earning a Diesel Technology & Alternative Fuels Certificate from Massasoit Community College. The remaining three participants are scheduled to complete their coursework by May 2026.
The year-long program provided participants with the opportunity to complete eight college-level courses at Massasoit Community College’s Canton campus, earning 24 college credits while developing specialized skills needed in today’s diesel and alternative fuel technology industries. Courses included Engine Principles, Electrical Systems, Truck Components I & II, Compressed Natural Gas Engines, Fuel Systems, Electronic Engine Diagnostics, and Hydraulics.
In addition to classroom instruction, the program emphasized strong collaboration with workforce partners. Key program partners included Brockton Area Transit Authority, Ballard Trucking, R&D Truck Repair, Inc., MassHire Greater Brockton Career Center, MassHire Greater Brockton Workforce Board, and Massasoit Community College. These partnerships ensured that training aligned with industry needs and provided participants with opportunities to connect with employers in the field.
Participants demonstrated a strong commitment to the program by completing one year of part-time coursework while balancing work and personal responsibilities. The first cohort completed training between January 2024 and December 2024, and the second cohort completed training between January 2025 and December 2025.
The March celebration event provided an opportunity for participants to reconnect, share their experiences, and discuss how the training has helped advance their career pathways in the diesel and transportation industries. The program highlights the importance of workforce partnerships, industry driven training, and accessible education in helping individuals gain the skills needed for in demand careers.
